FADE IN — Title: The Wizard of Oz

Narrator: For nearly forty years this story has given faithful service to the Young in Heart; and Time has been powerless to put its kindly philosophy out of fashion.

…and to the Young in Heart — we dedicate this musical.

FADE OUT:

Aunt Em and Uncle Henry working at Incubator counting eggs —

DOROTHY

Aunt Em!  Aunt Em!

Fifty-seven, fifty-eight —

DOROTHY

Just listen to what Miss Gulch did to Toto!

She —

AUNT EM

Dorothy, please!  We’re trying to count!

Fifty-eight–

DOROTHY

Oh, but Aunt Em, she hit him over the –

UNCLE HENRY

Don’t bother us now, honey.

DOROTHY

Oh, but Aunt Em,

Miss Gulch hit Toto right over the back with a rake!

AUNT EM

Seventy —  Dorothy, please!

DOROTHY

And now she says she’s gonna get the sheriff, and —

AUNT EM

Dorothy!  Dorothy!  We’re busy!

UNCLE HENRY

Dorothy, you ain’t using your brain with Miss Gulch.

DOROTHY

I have so got brains.

UNCLE HENRY

Well, why don’t you use them?

Show a little heart yourself, and have pity on her.

DOROTHY

Well, gee, I try to have a heart.

UNCLE HENRY

She ain’t nothing to be afraid of. Have a little courage, that’s all.

MISS GULCH

What’s she done?

I’m hurt from the bite on my leg!

UNCLE HENRY

You mean Dorothy bit you?

MISS GULCH

No, her dog!

UNCLE HENRY

Oh, she bit her dog, eh?

MISS GULCH

You Mustn’t! Auntie Em!

Uncle Henry!  You won’t let her, will you?

Toto, darling!  Oh, I got you back!

Oh no, they’ll be coming back for you in a minute.

We’ve got to get away!

WICKED WITCH

Who killed my sister? Who killed the Wicked Witch of the East?

DOROTHY

It’s all my fault. I’m so sorry. My house dropped on her.

GLINDA

It’s too late! They are Dorothy’s now!

WICKED WITCH

Give me back those slippers! I’m the only one that knows how to use them. They are of no use to you. Give them back to me! Give them back!

GLINDA

Keep tight inside of them Dorothy. Their magic must be very powerful or she wouldn’t want them so badly.

WICKED WITCH

You stay out of this Glinda or I’ll fix you as well!

GLINDA

Oh fiddle faddle. You have no power while I’m here.

Be gone! Before someone drops a house on you too.

WICKED WITCH

So you best try to stay out of my way. Just try! I’ll get you, my pretty…

And your little dog too!

–Wicked Witch makes a dramatic exit–

–Munchkins come back out of hiding as Dorothy and Glinda talk-

DOROTHY

Which is it back to Kansas?

GLINDA

The only person who might know would be the great and wonderful

Wizard of Oz himself!

DOROTHY

The Wizard of Oz? Is he good, or is he wicked?

GLINDA

Oh, very good, but very mysterious.

He lives in the Emerald City

And that’s a long journey from here.

GLINDA

You will have to walk.

The Munchkins will see you safely to the border of Munchkinland.

Never let those ruby slippers off your feet or you will be at the mercy of the Wicked Witch of the West.

DOROTHY

But how do I start for Emerald City?

GLINDA

It’s always best to start at the beginning,

And all you do is

Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Scarecrow changes directions he is pointing but is completely still otherwise. –

SCARECROW

It’s pleasant down that way, too.

DOROTHY

SCARECROW

Of course, people do go both ways!

DOROTHY

Why, you did say something didn’t you!

Are you doing that on purpose or can’t you make up your mind?

SCARECROW

I haven’t got a brain, only straw.

So I ain’t got a mind to make up!

DOROTHY

Well, how can you talk if you haven’t got a brain?

SCARECROW

I don’t know.

But some people without brains do a lot of talking don’t they?

DOROTHY

Yes, I guess you’re right. Can’t you get down?

SCARECROW

Down? No, you see I’ve got a pole stuck up my back.

DOROTHY

Is there any way I can help you?

SCARECROW

Bend that nail down in back and maybe I’ll slip off.

Do you think if I went with you this Wizard would give me some brains?

DOROTHY

I couldn’t say. But even if he didn’t, you’d be no worse off than you are now.

SCARECROW

Oh that’s too bad. Don’t you think the Wizard could help him too?

DOROTHY

I don’t see why not.

We’re on our way to see the Wizard now. To get him a heart.

SCARECROW

Don’t cry – you’ll rust yourself again!

GLINDA

I hear you, Scarecrow. And though I

can’t undo the magic of the Wicked

Witch, perhaps a little magic of my

own will save the day.

Scene 18 (King of the Forest)

(All look up to the sky, scared, to see the Wicked Witch writing something)

LION

Who’s her? Who’s her?

DOROTHY

It’s the Witch! She’s followed us here!

SCARECROW

What’s she doing with all that smoke?

TINMAN

She’s writing with it.

LION

What it say? What it say?

DOROTHY

Surrender Dorothy.

GUARD

Dorothy? Did you say, “Dorothy”?

The Witch’s Dorothy? Well, — that makes a difference.

All of you wait here – I’ll announce you at once!

SCARECROW

Did you hear that? He’ll announce

us at once! I’ve as good as got my brain!

TINMAN

I can fairly hear my heart beating!

DOROTHY

I’ll be home in time for supper!

LION

In another hour, I’ll be King of the

Forest. Long live the King!

LION

🎵 IF I WERE KING OF THE FOREST,

NOT QUEEN, NOT DUKE,

NOT PRINCE…

MY REGAL ROBES OF THE

FOREST…WOULD BE SATIN, NOT

COTTON,

NOT CHINTZ.

I’D COMMAND EACH THING,

BE IT FISH OR FOWL…

WITH A WOOF AND A WOOF

AND A ROYAL GROWL – WOOF.

AS I’D CLICK MY HEEL

ALL THE TREES WOULD KNEEL,

AND THE MOUNTAINS BOW,

AND THE BULLS KOWTOW…

AND THE SPARROW

WOULD TAKE WING.

‘FI – ‘FI – WERE KING!🎵

Scene 19 (OZ)

–All enter to see the huge head of OZ–Real OZ is hiding behind curtain with a megaphone–

OZ

(using a megaphone)

I am Oz, the great and powerful.

Who are you?

DOROTHY

I —- if you please, I – I am Dorothy…

We’ve come to ask you…

OZ

Silence!

The Great and Powerful Oz knows

why you have come.

Step forward Tin Man!

TINMAN

Ohhhh!

OZ

You dare to come to me for a heart, do you?

TINMAN

Ohhh – yes… yes, sir, –

OZ

Quiet!

And you, Scarecrow, have the

smarts to ask for a brain

SCARECROW

Yes —- yes, Your Honor – Your Wizardry!

OZ

Enough! Uhhh – and you

Lion…Well?

(Lion passes out on the stage and Dorothy runs to him)

DOROTHY

You ought to be ashamed of yourself

– frightening him like that, when he

came to you for help!

OZ

Silence whippersnapper!

Oz has every intention of

granting your requests!

OZ

But first, you must prove yourselves

worthy by performing a very small task.

SCARECROW

A small task? Is that all?

TINMAN

You name it and it’s half done.

OZ

Bring me the broomstick of the Witch of the West.

TINMAN

B-B-B-But if we do that, we’ll have to kill her to get it!

OZ

Bring me her broomstick and I’ll

grant your requests. Now, go!

Scene 20 (Flying Monkeys)

WICKED WITCH

(Enters holding flowers)

I hate her. I hate her

not. I hate her. I hate her not.

(She rips off all the petals)

I hate, hate, hate, her.

Now I understand why the

poppies failed me.

WICKED WITCH

I’ll conjure up a spell to take the fight out of her.

Now which of my creepy-crawly

creations shall I send to plague her?

(Witch calls out to her flying monkeys using her crystal ball)

FLYING MONKEYS
Ahhhhhh! Ahhh! Ahhh!

DOROTHY

What’s happening?

LION

Look at the size of them birds!

DOROTHY

They’re not birds, they’re monkeys!

ALL

Flying monkeys!

FLYING MONKEYS
Ahhhhhh! Ahhh! Ahhh!

TINMAN

Go away now!

SCARECROW

Help! Help!

DOROTHY

Oh – Help! – oh! Help!

(Monkeys take Dorothy away and other

Monkeys surround Scarecrow, Tinman, and Lion)

LION

They’re getting away with Dorothy.

DOROTHY

Help! Help me!

FLYING MONKEYS
Ahhhhhh! Ahhh! Ahhh!

(Flying monkeys fly away with Dorothy, other members chase after them)

(Flying Monkeys bring Dorothy to the Witch)

WICKED WITCH

I trust you had a nice flight.

It’s so nice of you to visit me in my loneliness.

DOROTHY

What are you going to do with Toto?

WICKED WITCH

We’re going to drop him in the river if

you don’t hand over those slippers!

DOROTHY

But the Good Witch of the North told me not to.

WICKED WITCH

Very well. Throw that dog in the river!

DOROTHY

No! No – No! Please… (crying)

You can have the slippers yourself! I

don’t want them, — just give me back Toto!

WICKED WITCH

That’s a good little girl, I knew you’d see reason!

(she reaches for the slippers and they zap her)

Ouch!

DOROTHY

How can anyone be so nasty, mean and cruel?

WICKED WITCH

Lots and lots of practice., I can’t wait

forever to get those shoes…

DOROTHY

(crying) Oh, I’m frightened. I’m

frightened, Auntie Em, — I’m so frightened!

AUNT EM

(appears on stage) Dorothy,

Dorothy– where are you! It’s me —-

it’s Auntie Em. We’re trying to find you. Where are you?

DOROTHY

I’m here in Oz, Auntie Em! I’m

locked up in the Witch’s castle… and

I’m trying to get home to you! (Auntie Em exits)

Oh, Auntie Em, don’t go away, I’m frightened!

Come back! Come back! Auntie Em!

WICKED WITCH

(making fun of her) Auntie Em –

Auntie Em – come back! I’ll give you

Auntie Em, my pretty! (exits laughing evilly)

Scene 21 (Water the Witch)

–Scarecrow, Tinman, & Lion find the Witches Castle and begin breaking down the door to rescue Dorothy– Hourglass counting time when witch returns–

DOROTHY

The sand’s almost run out and then

the witch will come for me.

SCARECROW

(shouting from offstage)

Dorothy, are you in there?

LION

It’s us! Are you all right?

DOROTHY

Yes, yes, I’m fine but the witch’s

locked me in!

TINMAN

Stand back while I break it open!

DOROTHY

Oh, hurry! Please, hurry!

The hour glass is almost empty!

(they enter breaking down the door)

SCARECROW

Hurry, we’ve got no time to lose!

–The hourglass runs out of sand and the Witch enters with her monkeys–

WICKED WITCH

Going so soon? Well we won’t hear of it. Will we?

FLYING MONKEYS

Growling noises

LION

I think we’ve outstayed our welcome.

WICKED WITCH

(Starts chasing everyone around the room)

Ring around the Rosey!

A pocket full of spears!

The sands of time have run out for you.

The last to go will see the first three go before

her! And your mangy little mutt, too!

Eeeniee Meeenie Minie Mo.

Who shall be the first to go! Girl?

Tinman? No! My broom has

chosen… Scarecrow!!!

SCARECROW

No! No! No!

WICKED WITCH

What’s the matter? Don’t you want

to meet my old flame?

(Casts a fire spell to burn him)

DOROTHY

(gets bucket and throws water on Witch)

No!

WICKED WITCH

Ohhh! You cursed brat!

Look what you’ve done!

I’m melting! Melting!

Oh, what a world! What a world!

Who would have thought a good little

girl like you could destroy my

beautiful wickedness?

Ohhh—— going, going gone…

FLYING MONKEYS

Yelling

LION, TINMAN, SCARECROW

She’s – she’s dead. You’ve killed her.

DOROTHY

I didn’t mean to kill her, — really I

didn’t. It’s – it’s just that she was

going to set him on fire!

ALL

(Chorus members enter from both sides of the stage)

Hail to Dorothy! The Wicked Witch

is dead! You are now our Queen.

DOROTHY

Oh, that’s very kind of you. But I

have to get back to Kansas. The

witch’s broom! May we have it?

ALL

Please. Take it with you.

DOROTHY

Oh, thank you so much! Now we

can go back to the Wizard and tell

him the Wicked Witch is dead!

(Marching all together back to Emerald City with the Witches Broom)

ALL

THE WICKED WITCH IS DEAD. :ll

Cheering!

Scene 22 (Man behind the Curtain)

–Dorothy, Tinman, Lion, & Scarecrow return with toto to Emerald City to give the Wizard the broomstick. –

OZ

Why have you come back?

DOROTHY

Please, sir. We’ve brought you the

broomstick. We melted her.

OZ

Oh, you liquidated her, eh?

DOROTHY

Yes, sir. So we’d like you to keep

your promise to us, — if you please, sir.

OZ

Not so fast! Not so fast!

Go away, and come back tomorrow!

DOROTHY

Tomorrow? Oh, but I want to go home now!

TINMAN

You’ve had lots of time already!

DOROTHY

Hey, what’s behind that curtain?

OZ

The Great Oz has spoken! Now go!

DOROTHY

Pulls the curtain back revealing OZ

Come out of there!

OZ

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

DOROTHY

Who are you?

OZ

I am the Great and Powerful —-

Wizard of Oz.

DOROTHY

You are? I don’t believe you!

OZ

No, I’m afraid it’s just me.

DOROTHY

Oh… you are a very bad man!

OZ

Oh, no, my dear. I am a very good

man. Just a very bad Wizard.

SCARECROW

What about the heart that you

promised Tinman?

OZ

Well, I —-

SCARECROW

And the courage that you promised

Cowardly Lion?

OZ

Well, I —-

TINMAN & LION

And Scarecrow’s brain?

OZ

Why, anybody can have a brain.

(Pulls out a sack & Hands Scarecrow a prop brain)

SCARECROW

Hurray! I’ve got a brain!

OZ

As for you, Lion.

You are now a member of the Legion of Courage!

(Gives Lion an award)

LION

Oh – oh, shucks, folks – I’m

Speechless!

OZ

As for you, my Tin friend,

You want a heart even if it hurts!

TINMAN

I still want one.

OZ

A heart is not judged by

how much you love, but by how

much you are loved by others.

(Hands Tinman a ticking clock heart)

TINMAN

Oh. Oh, it ticks! Look! Listen to my

heart, it ticks!

LION

Read… read what my medal says.

DOROTHY

Awarded for Courage!

LION

Ain’t it the truth! Ain’t it the truth!

DOROTHY

Oh, they’re all so wonderful.

SCARECROW

Hey, what about Dorothy?

OZ

Yes. Dorothy.

DOROTHY

Oh, I don’t think there’s anything in

there for me.

OZ

The only way to get Dorothy back to

Kansas is for me to take her myself!

ALL

Chorus members enter energetically cheering

HIP-HIP-HURRAY!

ALL

ll: 🎵 HA – HA – HA!

(Oz and Dorothy enter into a hot air balloon / flying machine to return to Kansas but it malfunctioned & broke)

ALL

Ahhhhhhh

(falling out of basket on the ground, chorus members and OZ scatters, leaving Dorothy crying with Tinman, Scarecrow, & Lion)

Scene 23 (There’s No Place like Home)

–Glinda enters to comfort Dorothy–

DOROTHY

Oh no, I’ll never see Kansas again as long as I live.

GLINDA

Never is a very long time, Dorothy.

DOROTHY

Oh help me please, can you help me?

GLINDA

You don’t need to be helped any longer.

You have always had the power to go back to Kansas.

LION

Then why didn’t you tell her sooner?

GLINDA

Because she wouldn’t have believed me.

She had to learn it for herself.

TINMAN

What have you learned, Dorothy?

DOROTHY

I miss Uncle Henry, Auntie Em, and Kansas.

If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again,

I won’t look any further than my own backyard.

GLINDA

That’s it! Now those magic slippers will take you home in two seconds. Just click your heels together and repeat “There’s no place like home.”

DOROTHY

Holding toto and clicking heels together

Oh it’s going to be so hard to say goodbye.

I love you all so much.

Goodbye Tinman, here’s your oil can so you don’t rust.

TINMAN

I know I have a heart now because it’s breaking.

DOROTHY

Goodbye Courageous Lion, I’ll miss you

LION

crying

DOROTHY

Scarecrow, you were my first friend here.

I’ll miss you most of all.

SCARECROW

Goodbye Dorothy, I’ll think about you always.

GLINDA

Are you ready now?

DOROTHY

Yes, before I change my mind and stay forever.

GLINDA

One….

DOROTHY

*There’s no place like home*

GLINDA

Two….

DOROTHY

*There’s no place like home*

GLINDA

Three….

DOROTHY

*There’s no place like home*

GLINDA

Goodbye Dorothy!

*Dorothy falls asleep in OZ then wakes up in Kansas- Everyone else exits*

Scene 24 (Back in Kansas)

(Aunt Em & Uncle Henry enter finding Dorothy laying out in the field)

AUNT EM

Dorothy, Dorothy…

I’m guarding you now, Honey.

I’ll see you come to no more harm.

DOROTHY

Auntie Em! But I did leave you.

That’s just the trouble. And I tried to

get back for days and days.

AUNT EM

Sounds like a bad dream.

It was the Twister, we were so worried.

DOROTHY

It wasn’t a dream… where’s the Scarecrow?

AUNT EM

Scarecrow?

UNCLE HENRY

Dorothy! Oh, You’re safe and well.

DOROTHY

You don’t understand.

This was a real place. The Land of Oz.

It was beautiful, and you were all there.

Don’t you believe me?

AUNT EM

Of course we believe you, Dorothy.

But now we’ve got to get you into bed.

DOROTHY

Has the house come back?

It fell on the witch, you know.

AUNT EM

Storm passed right by it.

And it wasn’t a house that fell on Miss Gulch.

It was a telephone pole.

UNCLE HENRY

We won’t be hearing from that Old

Witch until her leg heals.

DOROTHY

Then Toto’s safe.

You hear that, Toto?

We’re both safe.

And we’re home.

Home! And you’re all here.

And I’m never going to leave here

ever, ever again, because I love you all.

And… oh, Auntie Em, there

really is no place like home!!

There’s a land that I heard of

Once in a lullaby

Somewhere over the rainbow, Skies are blue

And the dreams that you dare to dream

Really do come true

Someday I’ll wish upon a star

And wake up where the clouds are far behind me

Where troubles melt like lemon drops

Away above the chimney tops

That’s where you’ll find me

Beyond the rainbow

Why, oh why can’t I? 🎵
